January 16, 2015

Up to another early text from L at 5:31 asking if I could pick up  the boy and drop him off - sure why not?!   Quick shower, once the alarm had me up, then The Gathering of almost 3 years of grad school papers so I would have something to do tonight.  Preparation is key.  I also packed a dinner.  I'm a proper preparationer.

At school, it was was Friday which means something a little different for our class.  Earned free-time is given for a week's hard work.  Unfortunately one of our kids chose to sleep Monday-Thursday, which was a lot of zeros. After school was a quick all-school meeting letting us know that our principal will not be there next year. That saddens me as I really like this man - he's a great principal - knows 98% of the school population by name.  Hopefully I won't be there, either, though.

OFF!  Picked up Mags and the boy and dropped Ethan off at home - on the way, he let me know he thinks he'll (probably)do the internship at Tom's Burgers and Frosty- which will be really  interesting.  Grabbed Maggie's friends and then, by request, we went to Starbucks.  I gave a girl a $5 bill to grab me a medium latte...she never gave me any change back.  What an interesting decade these kids are. Nevertheless, we headed to the place this Meet 'n Greet was taking place.  We got there at 4:45ish.  I lugged all my papers upstairs and camped out with a view of the whole place  - though the crowd of young estrogen was hidden.  Still every 15 minutes or so, I heard screams.  It was like a rerun of the Ed Sullivan show, minus Ed Sullivan...or the Beatles...

Despite all the paperwork I'd brought, I was essentially done in an hour, throwing a LOT away.  I kept hearing those screams and seeing girls, wearing the Taylor Caniff tie-dye shirts and rolled up bandanas on their heads like hippie Latino gang members.  They look ridiculous, but ohmygoodness, they are so thrilled.  At one point, I saw Scott Thunes was on-line, so I wished him a happy Hips show and he asked where the heck I was.  He looked the guy up and commented on his..<ahem> look.  I won't go into details, but I agree.  I texted L at one point that this was stupid.  He said I'm the best mom there ever was.  I responded that I'm fucking awesome.

After 5 hours, I finally saw the three girls walking towards me with flushed cheeks, floating on air.  He had kissed one girl on the cheek - they all had signed items.  They weren't ever going to shower again.  I smiled, thinking of the story about my mom when she'd met Peter Who-Ever in Switzerland at age 15.  I feel gypped.  I was never taken to see anyone when I was 15.  And now Dave Grohl is already married, and really...I'm not like that, anyway.  It's AWESOME to know some incredibly talented people - but I could never go up and ask for a picture... well, except for Scott Thunes, but he gets me.  It was, all in all, worth it, to see these girls so thrilled about their experience.  That's what is crucial - is providing different experiences for our kids so they can grow, learn, FEEL  I look forward to their next experience when they want to see who ever and I say, "Hell, no."  <I still hear the screams of a thousand girls>
